But not all product managers are the same. Some are better than others at making data-driven decisions, and some are terrible at it.
So what’s the difference?
How do you master using data to drive your product strategy?
Here are five rules to follow.
- Math and statistics are your thing (or find someone who is).
- Ensure your team understands how to use data.
- Get to know your customers’ behaviors and motivations beyond product metrics.
- Whenever you evaluate results, keep a broad perspective in mind.
- Don’t be afraid to change directions.

- Make decisions about new features and when to release them.
- Analyze how those features impact customers.
- Learn about our customers and their needs so we can develop new products and features that will be useful to them.
