Product managers are all about data-driven decisions. They crunch the data, look at the numbers, and ensure that what’s being released has some real value for customers.

But not all product managers are the same. Some are better than others at making data-driven decisions, and some are terrible at it.

So what’s the difference?

How do you master using data to drive your product strategy?

Here are five rules to follow.

  1. Math and statistics are your thing (or find someone who is).
  2. Ensure your team understands how to use data.
  3. Get to know your customers’ behaviors and motivations beyond product metrics.
  4. Whenever you evaluate results, keep a broad perspective in mind.
  5. Don’t be afraid to change directions.

I’ve had the opportunity to use data in several different ways as a Product Manager:

  1. Make decisions about new features and when to release them.
  2. Analyze how those features impact customers.
  3. Learn about our customers and their needs so we can develop new products and features that will be useful to them.
